Skyline Delineation

The skyline of Atlanta is done in pen & ink. The pen & inks lend themselves to high contrast drawings. Since the lines are either black on nothing there is no room for compromise. The exactness and precision that the ink lines offer are excellent for architectural subject such as skylines. The lines in the drawing are all sharp and crisp due to the pen tip.

Hatching & Cross-hatching

The shade and shadows on this pen & ink are extensive. Lake Clara Meer is seen with all kinds of lines, the shoreline is heavily treated with hatching. The darkest part of the drawing is near the shoreline due to the lack of light.

Skyline Delineation

The skyline sketch is first laid out in pencil then I go over this in ink so that you can more clearly see the angle and horizon line. The pen & ink help convey the substance of the drawing better than just pencil alone. Please note that all of these lines are loosely done and provide the suggested concept of the work of art to come. This is just the staring point of the rendering process and this sketch is on a separate sheet of paper from the original work of art to come.

Hatching & Cross-hatching

The shade and shadows on the sketch are to help denote the affect of light on the composition. One of the most effective ways to demonstrate shade and shadows are with hatch lines. Hatch lines are short parallel lines drawn in a row along a shaded surface to as to “cast” the shadow on the image in the drawing.

Atlanta Skyline Brown Pen & Ink Drawing Of Piedmont Park #027Z

Atlanta skyline pen & ink cityscape drawing of Midtown in Piedmont Park by Lake Clara Meer.

This article is about Atlanta skyline #027Z brown pen & ink drawing of Piedmont Park, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This article is about my brown pen & ink drawing of Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Georgia.

Atlanta Skyline Brown Pen & Ink Drawing Of Piedmont Park #863. This kind of drawing, it is recommended that you do the following:

  1. Have extra supplies and snacks on hand.
  2. Study the contour of the trees with the skyscrapers.
  3. Make use of cross hatching for deeper tones.

The brown ink that I have employed for this drawing has worked very well for me. The tone of the ink goes will with the light brown paper and the shadows in the drawing all compliment this tone.

I am very will pleased with how well cross hatching has made Lake Clara Meer look so alive. When I look at this drawing all that I can see is the stirring of the lagoon.

The skyscrapers in the background almost seem to grow out of the landscape. The use of ink details in the shrubs and trees is very will executed and convinces the viewer that this is truly a tranquil place.

Atlanta Skyline Red Pen & Ink Drawing Of Piedmont Park #026Z

Atlanta skyline #860A pen & ink cityscape drawing of Piedmont Park in Midtown by Lake Clara Meer.

This article is about Atlanta skyline #026Z pen & ink of midtown, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This article is about my red pen & ink drawing of the Atlanta, Georgia, skyline at Piedmont Park. Skyline Red Pen & Ink Key Points:

  1. Have all of you art supplies in order and extra stocks of it.
  2. Study the movement of the water.
  3. Watch the time of day and calculate the time for the angle of the sun.

Regarding the angle of the sun, which is very important, be sure to have the rays of light working with you and on the subject. Do not have the subject in shadows. It is amazing how often I encounter artist drawing their subject in the shade. Much of the time this was due to poor calculation of time, for as the day passes the sun moves and soon they find that their subject is in the shade. Make sure that you give yourself time!

In this red pen & ink drawing I have made use of the suns rays which in this drawing are coming in from behind me over and to the right. The shade of the buildings in the back ground reflect this.

I am very please with my handling of the motion of the water. When you look at the center you can see how the strokes of ink have dissipated. Keep in mind that loose following lines work better for you on water than cross hatching. Hatching is best utilized in places such as under the trees on the shore line.

All in all the clarity of line work in the drawing is very good and has rendered the landscape of Piedmont Park admirably.

Atlanta Brown Pen & Ink Skyline Drawing Of Midtown #024Z

Atlanta skyline brown pen & ink drawing

This article is about Atlanta skyline #024Z brown pen & ink drawing, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This article is about my brown pen & ink drawing of midtown Atlanta, Georgia, at Piedmont Park.

Atlanta Brown Pen & Ink Key Features:

  1. Landscape
  2. Pen & Ink
  3. Water

The brown color ink make a nice tone to this lovely setting in Piedmont Park. So often black ink is used for pen & ink drawings, and I have a deep love for black ink. However, on occasion it is nice to try a different tone.

My focus for this drawing really is the water. I have done a good job of capturing the rustling water near the shore line then showing the gradual dissipation of the waves as they enter the center of the lagoon. The shade and shadows of the tree line was essential in getting the effect. The trees and foliage are almost non-descriptive as their negative space make for a fine support for the tower skyscraper that stand behind them.

Skyline Red Pen & Ink Drawing Key Points:

  1. Have all of your art supplies ready and at hand.
  2. Position yourself far enough from the lake to gain a full perspective of the site.
  3. Study the relationship between the landscape and buildings that stand behind.

This is a very popular view of midtown Atlanta, as seen looking across Lake Clara Meer to the skyscrapers of midtown. The lake is a wonder element that give a nice reflection that I utilize in both my pen & ink and watercolors of it.

I have chosen red ink to bring out the warmth of the hot Atlanta summer. Since red is an intense color I have used it in such a manner so as to defuse it throughout the drawing. I have only made small and intense line work on the side of the buildings to convey shade and shadows.

Atlanta Skyline Pen & Ink Drawing Of Downtown #021Z

Atlanta skyline #826A pen & ink cityscape drawing is popular because of it's view of downtown.

This article is about Atlanta skyline #021Z pen & ink drawing of downtown, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This drawing of downtown Atlanta is one of my best selling, if not, best selling print at Condren Galleries. The fine pen & ink lines gracefully delineate the contour of the skyscrapers. Prints & Scans Of This Drawing #021Z ~ Order Here.

Skyline Pen & Ink Drawing

  1. Have all of your art supplies ready at hand.
  2. Study the contour of the city skyscrapers.
  3. Position yourself where you have the best vantage point to gain a full perspective of the site.

I am delighted to say that this pen & ink drawing has been my best selling print and I am honored that it is from the great and noble city of Atlanta, which I truly love.

This drawing of Atlanta is different than my others in that I have chosen to do just the simple outlines with complimenting details rather then a fully rendered skyline drawing. These skyline drawings can get overwhelmingly complex and detailed to the point of bewilderment. There is just way too much information in the sites to adequately render on paper, even photographs blur many of the site features!

Because I have chosen to do a simple line drawing it is more difficult to render because it leave no room for making mistakes ~ you can see everything. When drawing it is wise to have a drawing post or bar to lean your arm against so that you can make steady lines. You do not want you lines to be “ruler” straight but you do need to have the put down orderly so that they make sense when you see the finished drawing.

Atlanta Pen & Ink Skyline Drawing Of Downtown #018Z

Atlanta pen & ink skyline drawing of downtown

This article is about Atlanta skyline #018Z pen & ink skyline drawing of downtown, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This drawing is my single best selling drawing of all time. Thank you Atlanta! This article is about my pen & ink drawing of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Prints & Scans Of This Pen & Ink Skyline Of Atlanta ~ #595Z ~ Order Here.

Pen & Ink Skyline Drawing Key Points:

  1. Select a good site that offers a premium vista and perspective.
  2. Have all of your art supplies ready and on hand.
  3. Study the contour of the structures to grasp the delineation of the drawing.

When you are working with pen & ink you have to always keep in mind that you are working with a high contract substance which allows for great diversity in detailing due to the power of the line. But it is also good to keep in mind that ink is very unforgiving and so you much very accurately place your lines so that they do not muddle the drawing.

In the drawing I have take to full pleasure of the pen and I let the ink flow gently over the paper. I have made it a point not to be rigid and “Architectural” in my rendering but rather open and free to form but keeping the definition of the skyscrapers intact.

It is a fine thing to draw a skyline anyway that you like, however, if you want to yield a fine artistic rendering that bears your style then you much be true to the forms of the buildings that are before you otherwise you have a subjective abstraction.

Atlanta Skyline Pen & Ink Drawing Of Downtown #017Z

Atlanta skyline #822A pen & ink black line drawing is popular because of it's view of downtown.

This article is about Atlanta skyline #017Z pen & ink drawing of downtown, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This article is about my pen & ink skyline drawing of downtown Atlanta, Georgia.

Skyline Pen & Ink Drawing Key Points:

  1. Have all of your art supplies ready and on hand.
  2. Choose a spot that has a clear view of the subject.
  3. Study carefully the contour of the structures.

This handsome drawing of Atlanta is a solid rendering of this great city. I have chosen to focus on the delineation of the skyscrapers rather than do an overall cityscape. Thus, I have no clouds, people, traffic, or construction anywhere in the drawing, enabling me to focus on the structures. I have drawn them in a such a manner so as to suggest a friendly gather of colleague instead of a random cluster of office buildings.

You will notice as you look closely at the rendering that my line work is loose and fresh giving a warmth to the drawing. I clearly do not want to do any kind of architectural rendering or illustration, which smacks of commercial values, rather my focus is on the joy of the line!
