Cityscape

This cityscape rendering is a pen & ink drawing of the Chicago skyline overlooking Monroe Harbor. The city scene is rendered as a silhouette because it shallow. Most skylines are flat with no depth of field because the are two dimensional. The sky is white as the paper because there are no clouds. Willis Tower is the tallest building on the left side of the drawing because it has 109 floors. The Aon Center is the tallest building on the right side of the cityscape because it has 80 floors.

Aon Center looks taller thank Willis Tower because it is closer to the shoreline. Willis Tower is located in the heart of the Loop far from the waterfront. Aon Center is on East Randolph Street and not in the Loop but on the shoreline. The Chicago Loop is the second largest concentration of skyscrapers in the country outside of Manhattan Island. Daniel Burnham, the author of the Plan of Chicago, envisioned Chicago to be the largest and most important city in the country.

After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, Chicago became the fastest growing city in the world. Chicago was larger than New York City at the end of the 19th Century because of the population growth. The City of New York annexed all the burrows around it to make one large city because it wanted to be larger than Chicago was.

Chicago Skyline 270A

The cityscape drawing is done in free-hand because it is linear. The line of the skyscrapers are vertical because they compliment the contour lines of the outline. Lake Michigan is at the bottom of the rendering because Chicago is on the shoreline.
