Cityscape

This cityscape rendering is a pen & ink drawing of Chicago from Monroe Harbor. The time of day is early evening overlooking the skyscrapers of the Chicago Loop reflecting in the waters of Lake Michigan. This city scene drawing is done as a silhouette because it show the high contrast of pen & ink. The drawing is done in free-hand because there were no rulers used to make the lines. Free-hand architectural renderings and illustrations look better than CAD generated drawings because they have warmth.

The sky is made with smooth parallel horizontal lines going completely across the paper. These lines are almost ruler straight because they look like a straight edge was used. The waters of lake Michigan is done with wavy parallel lines to indicate the movement of water in this cityscape.

Chicago Skyline 269A

The cityscape drawing is done in free-hand because it is a study in high contrast drawing. Pen & ink drawing use hatching and cross-hatching to make shade and shadows because they have not gradual change of tone. The pen and ink lines are stark and clean because there is no variation on ink used. This cityscape is very calm and soothing because the tone of the drawing is quiet. There are no bright lights or beams of light in the rendering.

The skyline is made of vertical parallel lines that look perfectly straight because they look like a CAD drafting print. These lines are done in free-hand because this is a work of Fine Art, not an architectural rendering. The bottom of the skyline has a cluster of trees all along the shores of Lake Michigan. These trees are also drawn with vertical lines to compliment the those of the skyline in this cityscape.
