This cityscape rendering is of downtown Chicago is at night. The drawing was done with a pen & ink stylus on paper because this shows details well. Pen & ink is the best drafting tool for drawing architectural subjects like this cityscape rendering. The architecture of the buildings has many fine details that are brought out with clarity by pen & inks. Pen & inks do not require shading like pencils because they are a high contrast medium. The color of the ink is black because it best fits the nighttime theme. This cityscape offers a lot in style because it uses contour lines for definition. The pen lines are short and straight because they are done with free hand. Free-hand drawings make the best renderings because they flow naturally and offer a Fine Art element to the work of art.
This rendering is not photo-realistic at all because it is a stylized rendering making use of horizontal and vertical lines. The horizontal lines in the sky are very ling because they cover the entire width of the paper. The cityscape drawing is a stylized rendering of the city at nighttime with the waters of Lake Michigan below. Long horizonal lines are drawn across the evening sky to capture the evening mood. Extensive use of hatched lines was used for shade and shadows because these offer solid form. This cityscape has many vertical hatch lines in the landscape at the bottom of the drawing. The tree lines is very clear to see because of the vertical hatched lines.
This nighttime cityscape of downtown Chicago is unique because it uses wavy horizontal lines. The scale of this rendering is large because the city skyline is large. The buildings are tall because of the large population in the city.
