Key elements of this work of art are as follows: Chicago skyline #2455A
Burnham Harbor
The view here is from Burnham Harbor in Lake Michigan, and the time of day is dusk. This is because you see the sun setting behind Willis Tower. If you look carefully, you can see the outline of the Chicago Board of Trade Building in the shadows of the tower. Just to the right is the new towering addition of Crown Plaza of Roosevelt University.

This is one of the newest additions to the famed mile long skyline front of Michigan Avenue before the famous “loop”. You can also see the detailed images of Trump Tower, Prudential Building, Aon Center, and Smurfit-Stone Building.
Color
This skyline painting of Chicago is done in watercolor with pen & ink and watercolor pencils. This technique of using watercolor in conjunction watercolor pencils is very difficult because you are working with two different type of medium that respond differently to water. Watercolors are fresh and spontaneous when you apply the water because they are translucent. When you apply water to the lines of the color pencil because the colors bleed from the lines and mix together. You do not know what the tone because that it is mixing right before your eyes.
Watercolor
With watercolor like oils, you can mix your paints prior to applying it to the surface. Another factor that makes watercolor pencils more difficult is that there is a tendency for the paint to blur and become one tone rather than various shades as you move the brush along the paper service. I make sure that the brush is very gently moistened before applying the water for a lot of water on a brush will cause more trouble than anything.
Pen & Ink
Another striking feature to this painting is that the pencil lines come to life when they are touched by water giving a rich luster of tones to the work of art. The many crosshatched lines give body and strength to the image, and this is then reinforced with the fine lines of the pen & ink that I put on at the end. Chicago, Illinois, is the third largest city in the United States.
