Celebrity

This celebrity rendering of Jake Gyllenhaal is a pen & ink drawing on Strathmore paper. I have made this a simple line drawing with a focus on contour lines because they show his body form. Contour lines best bring out the over-all shape of the figure because it eliminates the excess details. Hatched lines have been used slightly in the hair, but technically these are not true hatch lines.

Drawing Characteristics

Delineation

Characteristics of this celebrity draw are the contour lines that make his body shape. When I start a drawing I always begin with a free-hand pencil sketch because this is my road map. I do not copy or trace over the pencil lines, because then it would make all kinds of mistakes. The pencil lines are only a guide and you can see them even after I have finished the drawing. I do not put much pressure on the pencil because it would make the lines too dark and thus compete with the pen & ink lines. The pencil lines are only to compliment the pen & ink and not challenge it.
