Celebrity Portraits & Drawing Genres

Below are three links to genres of celebrity and drawing genres that I have done to help you understand my process:

  1. Pen & Ink sketch & wash:  #305A
  2. Color & lead pencil illustrations:  #289A
  3. Watercolors and tempera:  #1253A

Celebrity

This celebrity render of Fred MacMurray is done with black  pen & ink on Strathmore paper. The rendering was first drafted up with a pencil sketch that you see under the ink if you look closely. There is some hatching to make the shade and shadows.

The celebrity drawing is done with a fine time pen for the details such as the eyes and mouth because they need fine lines to delineate. The contour lines that out line Fred’s head is done with a medium pen nib. When I first started the drawing I wanted few lines.

Drawing Characteristics

Characteristics of this celebrity drawing are the contour lines that outline Fred’s face. You can see the pencil lines that I used as my guide just below the ink. These pencil sketches are crucial in putting the ink in exactly the right place. Pen & ink are very unforgiving and you must put it down carefully and with stealth. It is very important to be quick when you place your ink lines because if you are too slow the lines will be too thick and you will tend to go off the sketch line. The path of the pencil sketch is the railing that makes the rendering look good.
