Chicago Skyline Pen & Ink
This Chicago skyline #744A pen & ink drawing by artist, Navy Veteran, Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC, of Condren Galleries offering oils, watercolors, and prints. This pen & ink drawing is done of the near north side of Chicago at night. The greatest amount of light is coming in from above the cluster of buildings culminating with the John Hancock Center. Working with night time drawings is always a challenge and as always, I always learn more when my pen touches the paper. Every stroke of ink opens up know possibilities as I draw and I so want to capture as many as I can! Because Chicago skyline #744A is great, it’s prints are great!
Since the son is setting in the west and thus glowing behind the John Hancock Center I had to focus my attention and making the light radiate effectively. Also, the skyscrapers are dark and I knew that to darken them would ruin the drawing so I left them along so as to reflect the light. The water of Lake Michigan as well is luminous and not as dark as the heavens so I kept it light. However, I did darken the trees along the shore to support the structures above.
