Cityscape

This cityscape rendering is a pen & ink drawing of Chicago at night on Lake Michigan. Monroe Harbor is the location of Grant Park because it leads in the the Chicago Loop. The landscaping of the park can be seen directly below the skyscrapers because they are a visual support. Parallel lines are part of the hatching process because I wanted to keep the lines even to each other. Columns of parallel lines go along the lake and in the sky, because they designate the air and water. The interaction of the vertical and parallel lines make for tension in the middle of the cityscape.

Chicago Skyline 279A

The cityscape drawing is done with black pen & ink with a fine point pen. Monroe Harbor is the body of water at the bottom of the drawing because is is part of Lake Michigan. Hatched lines are used throughout the drawing to show shade and shadows. This rendering is a silhouette of the cityscape at night because there is no depth of field. The image of the skyscrapers are spaced apart because they would be too dark for the sky and water. I have make all of the parallel lines in this cityscape to be even because they make a pattern.

This silhouette is done with vertical and horizontal lines. Horizontal lines are used for the water and the sky because they compliment the horizon. Vertical lines are used to draw the skyscrapers because they are tall. Silhouette drawings are flat drawings because they offer no vanishing point. Silhouettes are images that are outlined in black because they show a profile. A cityscape is not a profile because it has depth of field.
