Description
Chicago “L” train 252A pen & ink city scene drawing of an elevated train going north on Wabash Avenue by Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC.
City Scene
This city scene rendering shows an “L” train going north on Wabash Avenue in front of 10 South Wabash Avenue in Chicago. The Silversmith Building is the location of this city scene because the train is right in front of it. The Silversmith Building was designed Peter J. Weber of D. H. Burnham Architects at the end of the Nineteenth Century. This area was the original downtown of Chicago because the city started in this city scene. State and Madison is the zero marker for the Chicago Cartesian grid because it is a block away for the Silversmith’s Building. Favor Ruhl & Watson art supply store was located in the Silversmith Building because, my father, James Corwin Condren owned both the Silversmith Building and Favor Ruhl & Watson.
Chicago “L” Train 252A
The city scene drawing is done with pen & ink on Strathmore paper. Hatched lines are use to express shade and shadows. Cross-hatched lines are not used in the city scene drawing because they make the image too dark. The shading under the “L” tracks needs to be light because there is too much density in this city scene. This city scene shows modern CTA train cars because of the aluminum. In previous years the CTA trains were white and green, because these are Chicago colors.
