Description
Board of Trade 215A Building Chicago, pencil landmark drawing by artist Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC.
Landmark
This landmark rendering is of the Chicago Board of Trade Building. The drawing of this landmark is in pencil. I have used two grades of lead for the drawing: 6B and Ebony Jet Black lead. Soft leads make dark lines for shade and shadows. The lines of soft leads are think and blurry. There are no hatched or cross-hatched lines in this landmark drawing because the lead is too soft. A few solid strokes take the same space as many hatched lines. The best drawings have fewer lines to convey the point of the image. The more lines that you add to a drawing, the more complex it becomes. On each side of this landmark building are tall skyscrapers of local banks and insurance companies. These tall building make the narrow street look like a cavern. There are no images of people or cars in the drawing.
Board of Trade 215A
The landmark drawing is loose and free. Art Deco is the style of Architecture for this landmark, because it was popular at that time. Monumental is the theme for Art Deco styling because all their designs are permanent. The façade of the Chicago Board of Trade is of stone and glass. There are no curved lines in the landmark building at all. In the middle of the building are two large air conditions systems, because this is a new element to the building. As improvements in architecture are developed, the management has kept up with the current codes. The building is clean and clear from all angles, because this is the style of Art Deco. Monuments can be seen from all sides, not just the front or side.
