Celebrity

This celebrity rendering of Albert Einstein is from an iconic photo that has been around for years. Immediately upon seeing the photo you know who it is. Since the photo is in black & white it lends itself to pen & ink. Einstein may have been a genius but when it comes to everyday living it was quite a different story. He was a very difficult person to live with and did not get along with his wife. Things got so bad that he made a list of things that he demanded of her to be done without question. One of these was not to have sex or any intimate contact!

Albert Einstein 377A

The celebrity drawing of Albert Einstein is a high contrast drawing because of the dark shade and shadows juxtaposed next to the lighted areas. I made a point not to use intense hatching to match the dark area in the photo because it would ruin the rendering. It is commonly thought when you draw from a photo that you copy it as it is. That is completely wrong. One never copies from a photo, rather one extrapolates from it. Because line drawings are not the same thing as chemicals. Areas that are dark in a photo have to be translated by delineation. This means that you have to demonstrate the image with contour lines to show shape and form to the rendering. Hatching endlessly to darken areas only will ruin the drawing.

Drawing Characteristics

Characteristics of this celebrity drawing are the contour lines. There is some hatching done to the figure drawing, but for the most part it is a contour line drawing.
