Description
Chicago “L” train 266A wreck downtown in the Loop pen & ink city scene drawing by Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC.
City Scene
This city scene rendering is of a collision of two “L” trains in the Chicago Loop downtown. The location of the train wreck is at Lake Street and Wabash Avenue because it is downtown Chicago. People are gathered everywhere to gape at the horrific accident because they are curious. Three train cars have completely fallen off of the “L” tracks because this was a head-on collision. Train cars that did not fall off of the tracks are still derailed because of the impact of the collision.
The accident occurred in the evening so it is difficult to see all of the details in this city scene. At the bottom of this city scene you can see a large fire truck with it’s long ladder going up to the derailed train car above. Next to the fire truck is an ambulance with it’s doors open to give aid to the injured people. The train on the far right did not fall off of the tracks because it is still there. I have done a simple line drawing of this train because it is far from the accident. You are able to see it better with the loose free-hand lines because there are many hatched lines near it. The more pen & ink lines that you put into a drawing can make the image difficult to see because of all the hatched lines.
Chicago “L” Train 266A
The city scene drawing is done with pen & ink on Strathmore hot press paper. This is a free-hand drawing because no rulers or tools were used to make the lines. All of the line work is fresh and clear because of all the elements in this city scene. Hatched lines are used extensively in this city scene rendering because they offer shade and shadows. The pen & ink lines work well with architectural subjects because of all the structural elements in the skyscrapers and buildings. The “L” tracks are mounted on strong steel beams that support the rails because there are trusses all under the tracks. The trusses are delineated by the pen & ink lines because they render clear details.
All around this city scene people are gather to look at the horrific accident because they want to know what happened. City scene renderings offer subjects of people and buildings because they are both there. Downtown Chicago is one of the busiest inner city districts in the country. Only Manhattan Island has a larger and busier central business district. Los Angeles is a larger city than Chicago is because it has more people. However, downtown Los Angeles is small in comparison to that of Chicago because there are no train systems.
