Description
Chicago “L” train 265A next to Midway train pen & ink city scene drawing by Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC.
City Scene
This city scene rendering is of two “L” trains stopped near La Salle Street. Both trains are very close to each other because you can see their shadows casting on the tracks. Building completely surround the two trains because they are right in the middle of the Loop in downtown Chicago. The Loop has the second largest concentration of skyscrapers in the country outside of Manhattan Island in New York. The building are so tall that they have to be cut off at the top because they do not fit into the city scene. This is a close-up perspective of the Loop because we are looking at the trains. A perspective of the Chicago skyline would require a distance further away from the trains which would make them too small to me seen.
Chicago “L” Train 265A
The city scene drawing is done with pen & ink on Strathmore paper with medium nib. Two trains are parked right next to each other because they are going in different directions. One train is going to Midway while the other is going to Kimball Avenue. The two trains are letting passengers board and exit the train because they are seen on the right side. Hatched lines were used throughout the rendering to give shade and shadows to the image. Cross-hatching was not used because it is very sunny outside. The darkest part of the drawing is under the cars by the wheels and in between the cars. A good shot of both the fronts of the trains are seen because we are head-on view.
