Pencil portrait of Peter Kristan

This article is about American Legion drawing #279Z, of Peter Kristan, and written by artist and United States Navy Veteran, Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, which comes with JPEG & PDF scans for making prints, note cards, and stationery. Congratulations Peter Kristan!

Peter Kristan

Peter is the founder and owner of Kristan Funeral Home & Cremation Services, in Mundelein, Illinois.

Libertyville

Peter grew up in Liberyville, Illinois, and was classmates with Hollywood celebrity, Marlon Brando. Peter told me that he know him and that everyone called him “Bud”. This is the first time that I have ever known that Marlon Brando was called this. Also, Peter said that “Bud” was a quiet guy that kept to himself.

The day before this I had coffee with Peter at our “Cup of Joe” at the Area Coffee shop, hosted by Lake County Veterans & Family Services. As we were talking I asked him if I could draw his portrait tomorrow morning at the Post’s weekly coffee, and he said yes.

Mundelein Post #867

The next morning when I arrived at the coffee, I saw Peter, and I went up to him and said “let me settle in for a bit and then I will come over to draw your portrait.

The Drawing

Quick Sketch

It must be understood that this drawing is a sketch or vignette and not a “Studio” drawing or rendering. This is meant to be free and fresh, done right on the spot in a few minutes. All in all, the drawing took me about 10 minutes to do.

Peter was an outstanding sitter, and I will say, one of the best I have worked with in a long time. He did just as I asked, and never looked down to see what I was drawing. This is important, because I need to have the sitter looking at me in the eye at all time as I draw him to that I have the correct position of his eye balls. Even the slightest error in line placement at this point can ruin everything. The eyes are the most important element of any portrait.

Because I started the drawing with light lines making circles to place the size and scale of the figure. If you look closely you can see the light lines below the face.

As I capture more of Peter’s image, I then darkened the contour lines to give strength to his form. Following the lines, I made use of hatching and cross-hatching to give shade and shadow to the figure. This is important in bringing out the character of the sitter.

You have to be careful not to put down too many lines, just use enough to capture the spirit of the man!

The pencil drawing below is a very quick study of my follow Veterans at American Legion Post 867, in Mundelein. This time was near the close of our weekly coffee and so I quickly jotted down the images that were before me. You can see Arty still sitting and reading at the table, while others are gathering for their last few words before leaving.

There was not enough time to get an account of their faces or facial expressions, but I did have time to capture the mood. When I first thought about this drawing I was not going to do it because I knew that people were already up and leaving. With so short of an amount of time, I thought that it would not be worth proceeding. However, the spirit moved me, and I picked up my pencil and started to draw!

Rendering

I am so glad that I did take the time to do the drawing, for in those last few minutes I captured a moment in history now forever gone. The drawing is full of life and character, with movement all about it.

The best drawings are not necessarily the finished, polished renderings, but often times the quick studies.

The pencil drawing is of my Veteran colleagues at American Legion Post 867. We gather every Wednesday morning from 8:00 unto 10:00 AM for coffee and camaraderie. While we are conversing, I take my pencil and paper and draw.

It is not my desire to draw all the details of the scene or the room. My focus or intention is on the moving figures. In the drawing, which you can see below, I had to draft the first impressions immediately. This can be seen by the very fine, light swirling lines underneath the darker lines. There are there to catch the size, scale, and proportion of the figures.

Movement

Since the figures are moving I have to act quickly to catch their features. The person looking away from us is Marty talking with Fred. Behind Fred, reading a paper, and wearing a ball cap, at the table is Arty. I have made use of contour lines to capture the figures of the gentlemen and then set them against a backdrop of rapid shadow lines.

Pencil Drawing For American Legion Drawing #288Z

The pencil drawing is done with a 6B lead. As I came into the post this morning for coffee, just after 8:15 AM, I sat with my fellow Veterans and then got myself a cup of coffee. I came into the post with my satchel that has all of my drawing materials. Because I am a Veteran I love drawing images and portraits of fellow Veterans.

Returning from the kitchen with my mug of coffee sat at a table and joined in on the conversation. Shortly after I sat down I pulled out my paper and pencils and started to draw. My subject turned out to be two dear men that sat across from me at the table.

As usual, I lightly draw out the figure then move in with more detail and accuracy. The first image that I drew was of Rich Slovak. You can see the lightly penciled in circles that make up his head. I have made use of bold contour lines to outline his head and the used hatching and cross-hatching to give shade and shadows to the form.

To the right of Rich is Glenn. I have moved the two men closer together so that they fit into the picture, in reality they are further apart. Like with the drawing of Rich, my sketch of Glenn starts out loose and light and then I focus in on the details. Glenn, unlike Rich, is waring glasses. Glasses can be difficult to work with as they can distort the contour of the face. Further, doing shading with glasses can get tedious, which defeats the point of line drawings.

Contour Lines

I like to make use of contour lines to bring out the structured of the image. I am careful to blend contour lines with the shading so that the image does not look flattened.

When I have finished delineating the images I then put a nice touch of tone to the background with horizontal lines rushing upwards. The drawing took about 10 minutes to do.

The pencil drawing of Bateman Blair is a profile drawing. It was done this afternoon at the “Cup of Joe” coffee sponsored by the Lake County Veterans Foundation, in Grayslake, Illinois.

While enjoying the company of my fellow Veterans at the Area General Store in Mundelein, I pulled out my pencils and paper and began to draw Bateman.

As you can see from the drawing below, I first started the drawing by making light circles in the region of Bate’s head. Then as I “zeroed” in on the details of his face I became for precise in my line work. Bate was of course talking while I drew so the image is somewhat based on different positions of his face. However, his movements were not severe so what you see is pretty much what he looks like. Bate is a fine looking gentleman with stately facial features, and a man of honor.

As I continued with the detailing of his cranium contour lines, I then started to focus on his eye brows and nose. From here I worked my way down to his lips and chin. When I had these areas adequately detailed, I moved on to his hear. Prior to this I had outlined his entire head and now I was filling in his hair line and neck.

I work the fullness of his body through his shirt, you can even see the tip of his pen in his shirt pocket. In all the drawing took about 10 minutes to draw.

Edward Jones Art #283Z

Yesterday afternoon Travis M. Brown and Rick Melone of Edward Jones financial advisors hosted an art exhibit in conjunction with the Grayslake Arts Alliance. This was a great opportunity for Edward Jones to showcase their offices along with displaying artwork of local Grayslake artists.

Edward Jones is located at 10 N. Lake Street, Suite 113, Grayslake, IL 60030. Contact information:

The reception started at 4:00 PM, and lasted until 7:00 PM with many Edward Jones clients as well as members of the Grayslake Arts Alliance in attendance.

Because the tone of the exhibit was up-beat everyone had a good time. Edward Jones offered a fine array of refreshments and things to drink. The office nicely displayed the artwork that is on display for the exhibit. This is the first of a series of exhibits that Edward Jones is doing with the Grayslake Arts Alliance.

Travis and Rick, thank you for sharing with the community the joy of Art and celebrating your successes with your community friends and colleagues at the Grayslake Arts Alliance!

Hard To Love #280Z

Hard to Love #280Z an article by artist Stephen F. Condren at Condren Galleries.

Hard to Love #280Z or Baroque Art, is an article about a lecture give by Ellenor Alcorn to members of the Buckingham Society on 18th Century Art, at the Art Institute of Chicago written by artist and United States Navy Veteran, Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries. Congratulations Ellenor Alcorn!

Buckingham Society

The Buckingham Society is a group of members of the Art Institute of Chicago, dedicated to the museum by means of planned giving. At intervals throughout the year, the Art Institute sponsors special evens such as this luncheon, as a token of appreciation to the society.

Luncheon

The luncheon was located in the Nichols Board of Trustees Suite, located on the second level of the Modern Wing. We were provided with salad to start then a savory chicken and pasta. Desert was an orange flavored kind of gelatin with fruit, because it was the closing treat.

Ellenor Alcorn

Our speaker was Ellenor Alcorn, Chair and Eloise W. Martin Curator of European Decorative Arts. Ellenor was an outstanding speaker, because she has a gift for bringing the audience into her fold.

Invitation to Hard to Love #280Z

  • Slide presentation

The topic was on five prize pieces of Baroque and Rococo Art in the museum’s collection. Ellenor’s approach was innovative, because he integrated abstract images. She wanted the audience to cast a vote on weather we approved or disapproved of a work of art by means of a “thumbs up or down”. Thus, forcing us to take an aesthetic risk on the work of art prior to her discussion of the piece. Ellenor kept us on our toes!

She wanted us to look at the Baroque and Rococo on terms outside of “too much”. Also, she brought out points in each of the works of art that added new understanding to each piece taken as a whole. This was particularly true of the Meissen porcelain centerpiece.

The Exhibit

On Saturday, March 16, 2019, the Grayslake Arts Alliance, which is a Fine Arts Association, held it’s Pre-Spring Fine Arts Show & Sale. Because the exhibit was held at the Grayslake Heritage Center and was opened from 5:00 until 8:00 PM, many of the local residents were able to attend. For that reason, the exhibit was well attended with visitors from all over the community, all of them had the pleasure of participating in something vibrant and good.

Sara Brown

Our special guest of honor is Sara Brown, Library Director of the Grayslake Area Public Library District. Most importantly, Sara is the new director of the library, and she confessed to me that she “loved to read”, I found her guilty as charged! Sara comes here, to Grayslake from California, with her husband Greg. Welcome to Grayslake Sara!

Vincent Van Gogh A Predator Artist #131Z

Pen & ink drawing of Vincent van Gogh as a young man by artist Stephen F. Condren.

This article is about Vincent Van Gogh, a second rate artist, by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF prints and scans. As a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago with a major in Drawing & Painting I speak with reflection, earnestness, and authority on the subject of Art. Prints & Scans Of This Drawing #131Z ~ Order Here.

Task

A difficult to almost impossible task for anyone is to look at the work of a famous artist objectively. This topic can take up volumes and delve into the vast Psychological as well as Philosophical aspects involved in this task as well. However, for the scope of this small article I will not venture into these vast and complicated disciplines and keep the focus narrow like the scalpel of a surgeon, narrow but to the point.

Crudeness

When looking at the works of Vincent Van Gogh and coupling them with the known facts that we have of him I can only say that I am looking at the work of a truly second rate artist. Not only this, the manifestation of his images are always crude. There is no elegance and grace in any of the works of Vincent Van Gogh. These works come from the mind of sick person, a predator, a stalker.

The four paintings of Madame Roulin for example are nothing short of creepy and crude that lack grace, tone, balance, and any aesthetically pleasing elements. Madame Roulin’s face is simply repulsive by color and draftsmanship.

When looking at Starry Night I see insanity everywhere, and the large trees that loom in the foreground to the left are manifestations of giant Monsters from the Id, there is no comfort here.

Cutting Off Ear

The drawing of the Pollard birches are Vincent at his best and here we see that he lacks control of line work. There are no contour lines but rather a cluster of smaller stokes. Like his paintings everything is pulsating and deranged.

I ask the reader to just attempt to look at these works and make your own assessments. Please, come to these works with your own eyes and not of the vast sea of curators, critics, and dealers that are just towing the line of the times. Just look at these works and ask yourself would you hang any of them on your walls?

The act of cutting off your ear and sending it to those that you know is an incredible and horrific thing. These are the acts of a stalker and predator not a healthy well balanced person. However, History is glossing over this disturbing behavior in order to make manifest the “mad genius artist” myth. Today, if I were to cut off my ear would people be “accommodating towards me”, would it drive up the prices of my work?

Demythologize

We need to “demythologize” the life of Vincent Van Gogh, just like New Testament scholars such as Albert Schweitzer, Rudolph Bultmann, and Norman Perrin have done with the “Life of Jesus”. Vincent Van Gogh was a man of flesh and blood and was a predator. The best that the works of Vincent Van Gogh have to offer is a study of the mind of a malicious, crude, mentally disturbed person. Shall we now ponder the art works of Richard Speck and Charles Manson? It is cruel and wrong to elevate the works of the disturbed. Like the works of Pablo Picasso, the best place for them is in a vault because they are safe, gaining in value, and you don’t have to look at them.

Delineation

The line work for this drawing is very light because Mr. Van Gogh is so young.
