Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is my watercolor painting of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline at east Randolph Street.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Painting Of East Randolph Street #780. Key elements of this work of art are as follows.

  • Delineation
  • Skyscrapers
  • Lake Michigan
  1. Delineation: The lines in this watercolor are done with pen & ink and are the most essential element of the watercolor, for it is the line that gives form to the structures and not the watercolor, which merely renders the tone.
  2. Skyscrapers: The skyscrapers are composed of ink lines rather than pencil or paint, it should be noted that the watercolor is first drafted out in pencil in the most loose terms.
  3. Lake Michigan: The image of Lake Michigan is at the lowest level, however, this is the level that support the scene and give us the horizon line.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Painting At Sunset #079Z

Chicago skyline watercolor silhouette painting at sunset.

This article is about Chicago skyline #079Z Watercolor Painting At Sunset #775, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is my watercolor painting of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline at sunset.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Painting At Sunset #775. Key elements to this work of art are as follows.

  • Color
  • Contour
  • Light
  1. Color: The colors are a simple contrasting of yellows and blues. It was my intention to make a silhouette of this work and the wonderful display of angles given to us by the cityscape lent itself to this vision. In the right center can be seen the image of the broad shouldered Willis Tower.
  2. Contour: The contour of the watercolor is down with paint not line. No delineation of any kind is done in this pure watercolor. There are traces of the original pencil sketch that commenced the piece but this is more fundament and basic is level than the finished contour of the cityscape.
  3. Light: The light is a wonderful array of yellows in the evening sky and reflected in the water below. It is the sunset that really makes the piece and not the buildings, whose task is to pay homage to the sun!

Chicago skyline #712A pen & ink cityscape watercolor at sunset reflecting in the waters of Lake Michigan.

This article is about Chicago skyline #078Z watercolor painting with colorful sunset, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is a very colorful sunset painting of the Chicago skyline with rainbow colors in the evening clouds.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Painting At Sunset #712. Key elements of this work of art are as follows.

  • John Hancock Center
  • Lake Michigan
  • Color
  1. John Hancock Center: The John Hancock Center without doubt dominates the skyline as it should! This historic structure stands as the culmination of the surrounding skyscrapers of Streeterville in Chicago’s near north side. This watercolor is a perfect blending of both pen & ink drawing and watercolor painting. One form of art compliments the other.
  2. Lake Michigan: Lake Michigan plays a vital role in this sunset drama offering a wonderful reflection that cast the images of the city skyline with the glorious colors of the setting sun.
  3. Color: The colors in this work of art are as important as the pen & ink line work. The glorious yellow and maroons are cast into the night sky as their colors fade way in the deep blue tones of the sky. The clouds with their gaseous structure give a wonderful full body structure to the tones making for a full and rich sunset cityscape.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Sunset Painting #627. Key elements to this work of art are as follows:

  • Light
  • Water
  • Delineation

This is one of my favorite watercolor of Chicago, because it is at sunset. The sunsets in Chicago are wonderful, because the colors of the setting sun are reflected in Lake Michigan. The tall building which make up the famous Chicago skyline add to the drama of the watercolor, because their image is shadowed in the sunset.

Chicago Skyline Impressionist Watercolor Painting At Dusk.

This article is about Chicago skyline #074Z Impressionist Watercolor Painting At Dusk #626, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is my Chicago skyline Impressionist watercolor painting of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline at dusk.

Chicago Skyline Impressionist Watercolor Painting At Dusk #626. Key elements of the work of art are as follows.

  • Light
  • Color
  • Water
  1. Light: The lighting is crucial in this watercolor as it is seen in both the sky and the water, thus straddling the skyline in between.
  2. Color: The time of day is sunset and the heat of the setting sun is reflected in the strong yellow hues atop of the skyscrapers. As you look upward the heat from the sun dissipates into deeper reds and then finally move to a soft maroon.
  3. Water: The water of Lake Michigan acts as a colossal mirror reflecting both the skyline and the sunset behind.

Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is my Chicago skyline Impressionist watercolor painting of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline at dusk.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Painting At Dusk #610. Key elements to this work of art are as follows.

  • John Hancock Center
  • Sky
  • Color
  1. John Hancock Center: The John Hancock Center along with Water Tower Place stand at the center of this watercolor. Their reflections are loosely seen in the waters of Lake Michigan below. The cluster of buildings that culminate with the John Hancock Center gently dissipate on both sides and vanish into the evening sky.
  2. Sky: The majority of space in the painting is in the sky as the horizon line is very low to accommodate the tall buildings. The atmosphere is loose and calm as the clouds have vanished into the sky.
  3. Color: The sky is a mixture of blues and red making a violet and purple backdrop to the cityscape.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Painting With John Hancock Center #599. Key elements to this work of art are as follows:

  • John Hancock Center
  • Lake Shore Drive
  • Delineation

Chicago skyline #072Z

  1. John Hancock Center: The John Hancock Center stands firmly at the center of this watercolor. In this watercolor I have chosen to include the famous “X” patterns from the exoskeleton which make the building so famous. The colors are many in this painting as I have included an array of earthen tones to compliment the landscape, water, and sky.
  2. Lake Shore Drive: Lake Shore Drive is at our feet and the motorway portion to the immediate right which is off of the picture plane of the work of art. The dramatic use of shadows of the trees along the drive make an interesting path along Lake Michigan.
  3. Delineation: The line work in this watercolor is all done with brush, there is no application of pen & ink employed here. I am most pleased with the execution of the exoskeleton of the John Hancock Center.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Painting #071Z

Chicago skyline #430A cityscape watercolor with view of the Loop skyscrapers.

This article is about Chicago skyline #071Z Watercolor Painting, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is my watercolor painting of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Painting #430. Key elements to this work of art are as follows:

  • Color
  • Skyline
  • Lake Michigan
  1. Color: The colors in this painting are based on green and variations of it. The dominance of the sea green at the base of the painting gives a strong and robust presence of the downtown skyline. The waters of Lake Michigan are a solid form to rest the eye upon and then look upward towards the towering skyscrapers.
  2. Skyline: The skyline pictured here is looking west from Burnham Harbor. This is perhaps the most famous view of the city and certainly featured on many films and documentaries. In the skyline we can see the Willis Tower, Trump Tower, Aon Center, and John Hancock Center.
  3. Lake Michigan: The support for this watercolor is from the strong green that is given to us here from Lake Michigan. Though the base tone of this sea green is fairly light, I have carefully worked deeper tones of it so as to support the visual impact of the skyline.
