This article is about Chicago skyline #069Z Watercolor Painting At Night, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is my watercolor painting of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline at night.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Painting At Night #428. Key elements in this work of art are as follows:

  • Night
  • Sun
  • Lake Michigan
  1. Night: The evening sky is the calling card to the Chicago skyline painting. There is a mixture of reds and blues to make up the sky which are cast over the yellow hues that melt over the skyscrapers from the setting sun.
  2. Sun: The sun light is the strongest element in the watercolor skyline of Chicago. Though it is a small thin band, it is very strong in tone and hue. The city skyline is clearly outlined in the sky above and in the waters below.
  3. Lake Michigan: The waters of Lake Michigan add an extra dynamic to the painting as the night time sky is beautifully reflected in the water.

Chicago Skyline Sunset Watercolor Painting #067Z

Chicago skyline #423A sunset cityscape watercolor with yellow billowing clouds, and crimson red in the sky.

This article is about Chicago skyline #067Z Sunset Watercolor Painting #423, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is my watercolor painting of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline at dusk.

Chicago Skyline Sunset Watercolor Painting #423. Key elements to this work of art art as follows:

  • Sunset
  • Colors
  • Lake Michigan
  1. Sunset: The light of the sunset is the strongest element in the watercolor painting of downtown Chicago. The emphasis has been placed on the strong yellow tones emitting from behind the Chicago “Loop” near the Willis Tower. I have mixed white and various yellows to get this high level of intensity with worked out very well.
  2. Colors: The colors in the painting are in the yellows family for the immediate sunset and then we move into browns and red when we move up into the sky above the sunset. The water is a soft green mixed with blue and yellow.
  3. Lake Michigan: Though very small in proportion to the scale of the painting, the waters of Lake Michigan are crucial in supporting the skyline in the background.

Chicago Skyline Sunset Watercolor Painting #066Z

Chicago skyline #2455A pen & ink, cityscape, color pencil watercolor of downtown at sunset.

This article is about Chicago skyline #066Z Sunset Watercolor Painting #2455, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is my watercolor painting of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline viewed from Burnham Harbor at sunset.

Chicago Skyline Sunset Watercolor Painting #2455. Key elements of the work of art are as follows.

  • Sunset
  • Burnham Harbor
  • Lake Michigan
  1. Sunset: The setting sun is the glory of this work of art. I have accurately intensified the sun’s glowing aura just behind Willis Tower. Immediately after this aura the clouds hover over the Loop and give resistance to the sun and thus let the balance of the sky fall into a lilac light.
  2. Burnham Harbor: The scene is from the most popular view of Chicago, and that is none other than Burnham Harbor, named after the famous architect Daniel Burnham.
  3. Lake Michigan: Lake Michigan is the “red carpet” of Chicago, and she graciously sets out her best to offer a colorful evening sky.

Chicago Skyline Sunset Watercolor Painting #065Z

Chicago skyline #2354A pen & ink with color pencil cityscape watercolor at sunset over Lake Michigan.

This article is about Chicago skyline #065Z Sunset Watercolor Painting, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is my watercolor painting of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline in Lincoln Park, at sunset, in fall.

Chicago Skyline Sunset Watercolor Painting #2354. Key elements of this work of art are as follows:

  • John Hancock Center
  • Fall Season
  • Lincoln Park
  1. John Hancock Center: The John Hancock Center is quietly resting at the left hand side of the watercolor to balance the composition of the trees on the right side and the pond in Lincoln Park at the bottom.
  2. Fall Season: The colors are both of the fall season and at sunset to you have a winning combination of colors. The bright yellow on the right hand side is the after glow of the setting sun and the darker tones are the clouds and vapors in the more distant sky.
  3. Lincoln Park: The pond of Lincoln Park Zoo can be seen at the bottom of the watercolor and it should be noted that water does not reflect sunset colors, but rather the light of the reflecting shore line.

Chicago Skyline Sunset Watercolor #064Z

Chicago skyline #2317A pen & ink, with color pencil watercolor at sunset overlooking the skyscrapers and Lake Michigan.

This article is about Chicago skyline #064Z Sunset Watercolor, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is my watercolor painting of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline at sunset.

Chicago Skyline Sunset Watercolor #2317. Key elements of this work of art are as follows.

  • Sunset
  • Lake Michigan
  • Delineation
  1. Sunset: The yellow sun light gracefully compliments the violet tone in the higher atmosphere. The flow of light wraps around the John Hancock Center and recedes quietly into the lake on the far right side.
  2. Lake Michigan: The orange and blue tones from the lights of the city fill Lake Michigan. The sun is never reflected in the water only the city lights.
  3. Delineation: The line work has been carefully rendered so as not to be too sharp, rather, I desired a more muted tone so that the evening night light gently blends the buildings together. Deep and strong lines with detailed hatching would take away all the affects of soft evening light.

  1. John Hancock Center: The image of the John Hancock Center is done in soft lilac in accommodation to the same tones in the sunset. This soft color gives a gentle touch to the monarch of Michigan Avenue.
  2. Lake Michigan: Without the gentle curve of the shore the watercolor would be flat. Lake Michigan is crucial in every way to the pulse of this paintings as it is to the city.
  3. Sunset: The sunset sets the mood for this great city preparing for another nights rest. The glow of yellows and oranges fill the sky whose tones are echoed on east Lake Shore Drive.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor #158. Key elements to the work of art as follows.

  • Color
  • Burnham Harbor
  • Contour Lines
  1. Color: The color that I used for the overall tone is that of green, an almost terquoise green. This color permeates the entire fabric of the watercolor. Having this tone thoughout the work give continuity to the composition.
  2. Burnham Harbor: This is the most popular view of Chicago. Burnham Harbor is the front door of Chicago leading us from the waterfront to the Buckingham Fountain up to the foot of the Chicago Loop.
  3. Contour Lines: The lines of the watercolor are made of black pen & ink and carefully delineate the detail of each of the buildings without going into too much detail and then losing the caliber of the composition with dark spots and over hatched ink lines.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Of Near North Side #061Z

Chicago skyline #1449A pen & ink cityscape watercolor reflecting in the waters of Lake Michigan with views of the near north side

This article is about Chicago skyline #061Z Watercolor Of Near North Side, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is my watercolor painting of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline of the near north side.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Of Near North Side #1449. Key elements of the work of art are as follows.

  • Streeterville
  • John Hancock Center
  • Lake Michigan
  1. Streeterville: This area of Chicago is commonly called the near north side, however, in reality it is called and designated by the city as Streeterville. Famous for it’s fine shops and luxurious homes and condominiums, this area is one of the most sought after neighborhood in Chicago.
  2. John Hancock Center: The John Hancock Center looms over the skyline letting everyone know where you are. In this watercolor I have toned down the strong black paint of the building and removed the exoskeleton. Making these changes to the structure make it fit into the framework of the watercolor better. I rarely ever put hard black into any of my work, I most often tone down the black.
  3. Lake Michigan: Lake Michigan is indispensable in the watercolor for the glimmering reflections seen in the water make this scene come alive.

Chicago skyline #1170A pen & ink cityscape watercolor painting at sunset by Stephen Condren.

This article is about Chicago skyline #060Z Watercolor Sunset, which is for sale at discount with prints by artist Stephen F. Condren, BFA-SAIC, of Condren Galleries, a Fine Arts Gallery, offering JPEG & PDF scans. This is my sunset watercolor painting of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline.

Chicago Skyline Watercolor Sunset #1170. Key elements of this work of art are as follows.

  • Sunset
  • Burnham Harbor
  • Lake Michigan
  1. Sunset: The sunset hold the theme of this gracious skyline watercolor. This time of day is very popular amongst all genre of paintings due to the large range of muted colors in the sky. The yellow nicely delineates the contour of the skyscrapers which are mirror by the waterfront of Burnham Harbor.
  2. Burnham Harbor: The front door of Chicago is none other than Burnham Harbor. This view of the city is the “defacto” image that all the world thinks of when Chicago comes to mind. The harbor in named after the great Chicago architect Daniel Burnham who designed many ground breaking building.
  3. Lake Michigan: The waterfront of Lake Michigan offers an added element of light. The water never, however, reflects the colors of the sky at sunset, it only reflects the city lights. When you look at this painting and all other waterfront sunsets the same will hold true.
