Description
This is a pen & ink skyline cityscape drawing of downtown Tucson, Arizona at night #34A, by artist and United States Navy Veteran, Stephen F. Condren, BFA, SAIC, of Condren Galleries offering prints. This wonderful city is a place of beauty and rest with great weather, and fabulous mountain range views! When making a rendering of a skyline at night you have to be very careful. Because skylines for the most part are linear and thus need to be rendered exactly.
Lighting
The night time offers a lot of choice for setting a mood because of lighting. It is important to let the lines of the sky compliment the lines that make of the lines of the buildings. This is because you need to have these elements compliment each other. If you bring in the cross-hatching lines from the night sky down into the structures you have chaos on your hands. Clarity is the key to success in rendering. Lighting is crucial in all things when it comes to skyline. The buildings are a great image maker that can be well tooled with good lighting. Often I like to employ high-contrast lines to bring out the differences in the tone of the rendering. The more tones that you can successfully weave into the fabric of the drawing the better the work of art will be.
Landscape
This skyline is nice because there is a lot of light coming in from the front where there is a large parking area filled with lights. I have take advantage of this parking area to use as a prop for the buildings that are all around it. After the buildings there is the landscape with mountains. Since this is a night scene is it difficult to make out the mountains in the background. It is best practice to be low with intensity and move the tones into the scene slowly. Tucson skyline drawing #34A is a pen & ink.
