The Skyline
Looking west over Burnham Harbor is a spectacular afternoon view of the City of Chicago, Illinois. Because this mammoth metropolis on the banks of Lake Michigan is a Titian of cites. Currently Chicago is the third largest city in the United States. Los Angeles as number two and New York City as the largest.
Great Chicago Fire
Many people are unaware of the fact that at the turn of the 19th Century Chicago was the newest and fastest growing city in the world. The reason for this was due to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 where hundreds of people were killed and the city demolished by fire. In a very similar manner as that of San Francisco in 1906 because of no water pipes. The Chicago fire happened at a crucial time in architectural history. It was at this time the invention of the elevator came into use and with it the ability to construct very tall office buildings and towers.
