Cityscape

This cityscape rendering is a pen & ink drawing of the near north side of Chicago. Streeterville is the official name of this district because it was named after Alderman Streeter. The former John Hancock Center dominates the cluster of skyscrapers in this cityscape. At the bottom of the rendering is Lake Michigan because this is the shoreline. To the right is East Lake Shore Drive, the richest real estate in Chicago because of the high cost. At the turn of the 19th Century this area was all lined with mansions that overlooked Lake Michigan. Today almost every house is gone and replaced with high rises because of the demand for space.

After the Great Chicago Fire Potter Palmer built his famous castle on North Lake Shore Drive because he was the richest man in Chicago. His mansion was demolished in the 20th Century and replaced with a modern high rise. Prior to the Great Chicago Fire most of the fashionable homes were built on the south side in Prairie Avenue and Kenwood. With the advent of the fire everyone moved north because there was more land.

Chicago Skyline 273A

The cityscape drawing is done in free-hand because no rulers were used. hatched lines were used extensively in this cityscape rendering because they make the shading. The skyscrapers are drawn with vertical hatch lines because they compliment the design of the building.

This cityscape is a work of Fine Art not an architectural rendering because it is not commercial. CAD renderings look cold and stiff because they are computer generated. This drawing is done by hand because it has flowing lines. Great care was taken to make sure that the free-hand lines were straight because building need upright lines.
