Cityscape Art

This cityscape rendering is a pen & ink drawing of the Chicago Loop and East Randolph Street. The Loop has the second largest cluster of skyscrapers in the county outside of Manhattan Island, in New York. Willis Tower is the tallest building in the cityscape on the left. The St. Regis is the tallest building on the right side of the cityscape drawing. Trump Tower is taller than the St. Regis but because it is further from the shoreline it appears as shorter.

Chicago Skyline 281A

The cityscape drawing makes no use of hatched lines because there is no shade or shadows. A fine point #512 Speedball pen nib was used to make this cityscape rendering. The cityscape is an outline or silhouette of the downtown area. Cityscape art is very demanding because you have to draw all of the building correctly. If you do not delineate the buildings clearly then become lost in the details. The most important factor in drawing cityscape renderings is the careful use of the pen because blotches of ink can drop onto the paper ruining your work. This is most disturbing when it happens at the end of the work. When I have a drop of ink touch the paper early in commencing the drawing, I stop work on it and get a new sheet of paper.
