Description
Chicago skyline 272A pen & ink cityscape drawing overlooking Monroe Harbor from Lake Michigan by Stephen Condren.
Cityscape
This cityscape rendering is a pen & ink drawing of downtown Chicago from Lake Michigan, overlooking Monroe Harbor. The drawing is done in the afternoon with clear lighting because there is no shade. Grant Park is the landscaping at the bottom of the cityscape. All along the lakefront is a series of parks, because Chicago has the largest waterfront park system in the country. The center of the drawing show the Loop because the “L” train loops around it. Willis Tower is on the left side of the drawing and the St Regis is on the far right. Trump Tower is to the center right of the drawing. Trump Tower is taller than the St. Regis because it has 98 Floors. The St. Regis is closer to the water so it looks taller than Trump Tower.
Hatched lines were used extensively in this cityscape drawing because they make solid forms. The waters of Lake Michigan are a loose free-hand stroke that shows the movement of the waves. Willis Tower and all the skyscrapers were outlines with contour lines because this delineates their form. The vertical lines compliment the height of the tall office buildings of the Loop. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 the city was rebuilt with the newest architectural advances of that time.

The cityscape drawing is done in free-hand with pen & ink on paper. There were no rulers or straight edges used to make this cityscape rendering.
