Chicago Skyline #869A

  • Chicago Cityscape

This fine line cityscape is a rendering of Chicago skyline #869A. My intent for creating this drawing was to capture the image of the Chicago skyline in terms of delineation and not photography. So often people think about skylines in reference to photos when the image of the city can be beautifully harnessed in fine line drawings. Most importantly, it must be understood that any kind of image, photo or drawing, is a subjective element of the subconscious.

Pen & Ink Drawing

The artwork of artist Stephen Condren is showcased here at Condren Galleries. The areas of focus are Architectural Renderings, Portraits, Figure Drawings & Paintings, and Landscapes.

Cityscape Artist

  • Artist

The thin lines in the work of art show the details of the architecture rendered by the pen & ink. Because the fine lines offered to us by pen & ink it is only natural to convey this over to architectural drawing. Most importantly, architectural rendering and illustrations done with fine ink lines bring out the beauty of the architecture.

Sketching the rendering in pencil beforehand gives continuity to the drawing. Because I always start my artwork, be it an oil painting or watercolor, with a light pencil drawing or sketch. Because I need a formative layout to start the work of art with and then I progress to more complex detailing of the piece.

Chicago skyline #869A pen & ink cityscape drawing overlooking Lake Shore Drive by Stephen Condren.

The Skyline

In this splendid and gracious drawing of the Chicago skyline I have chosen to work with pen & ink.  Because this view is looking southbound on North Lake Shore Drive, thus the curving shoreline. The brown ink gives a warmth to the Chicago skyline pen & ink 6/24/2018D. Because I have done this drawing of North Lake Shore Drive you cannot see the till skyscrapers of the Chicago Loop. Therefore, to see the Chicago Loop you need to view the city from a different perspective. Most importantly, I and concerned about the proportions of the skyscrapers to the shoreline. Because if the case does not match the terrain the composition fails. This cityscape pen & ink drawing is available as prints and also scans for reproductions.

875 N. Michigan Avenue, Formerly the John Hancock Center

In the scene are the cluster of buildings forming an apex with the 875 N. Michigan Avenue, formerly the John Hancock Center, at the center of Streeterville. Directly below the John Hancock Center you can see the image of the famous Drake Hotel and then the series of gracious apartment building along East Lake Shore Drive. This is one of the country’s finest residential areas. Because Chicago skyline #869A makes use of a single pen with one point it is consistent in line weight. Because using many line weights can cause confusion in the image of the drawing. So, I made all the line weight in one level. Most importantly, the former John Hancock Center is the anchor image for the drawing. The image scans for reproduction are in JPEG and PDF formats.

Color

Because I have chosen the color of the ink is sepia (brown) which I think works well with the loose line work for this pen & ink drawing. Therefore, I have deliberately left the John Hancock Center in outline form rather than detail in all of the 100 floors. My reason for this is to reduce detail that will take away from the flowing composition of the drawing. It is best to remember that a good drawing is one that expresses the most with the fewest lines. Below in the water you can see a gentle reflection of the skyline that almost touches the shoreline from where the viewer is standing. Chicago skyline pen & ink 6/24/2018D has a fine light brown tone.

North Lake Shore Drive

My favorite element in the drawing is the image of Lake Point Tower (505 North Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, Illinois 60611). This can be seen as the very last structure in the drawing. There is a gap between it and the cluster of other buildings because it is the only building east of Lake Shore Drive. Because this image of Lake Point Tower is the very fine lines used to perfectly express the image, any more lines would only make it too tedious and less interesting. Chicago, Illinois, is the third largest city in the United States. Therefore, the brown pen & ink works will in the rendering to bring out the elegance of the cityscape because o the brown color. The thin lines made by the pen & ink show all the buildings along North Lake Shore Drive. Sketching the drawing first in pencil following with ink finishes the rendering.
