Chicago skyline #853A pen & ink watercolor cityscape painting by artist Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC, of Condren Galleries.
Key elements to this work of art are as follows:
Chicago
This cityscape watercolor is the culmination of three studies that I have done of the near north side of Chicago, Illinois. This cityscape is the section of Chicago that contains the famous Drake Hotel and East Lake Shore Drive.
Watercolor
The watercolor here is taken directly from the pen & ink cityscape drawing of same site. I have work very carefully with the line weight and its movement. I wanted to make sure that this watercolor was not at all architectonic but rather poetic. It is the goal of all of my work to be living poetry in the form of watercolors and pen & ink cityscape.
John Hancock Center
Looking at the drawing you will see that I have put the John Hancock Center right in the center of this cityscape rendering. That makes the John Hancock Center the subject of the piece. Since the Hancock Center is the tallest image in the watercolor I have angled it so that the surrounding building support it and not compete with it. For example I have carefully tucked away the Four Season Hotel behind and to the right of the Hancock Center. This is because I just show enough detail to let you know what it was. The angle of the Water Tower Place tapers towards the John Hancock Center in this cityscape drawing. This is because it is a visual support for it in this cityscape rendering.
Color
The colors of the piece are those of the structures with somber tones for the shadows mostly in the deep violets. The sky is a bright blue and exudes a cheerful atmosphere to the cityscape painting.
