Description
Chicago skyline 221A pen & ink cityscape drawing with view of the former John Hancock Center by artist Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC.
Cityscape
This cityscape rendering is of Streeterville in Chicago. Streeterville is located on the near north side of Chicago on Lake Michigan. The tallest building in Streeterville is the former John Hancock Center. This cityscape is a simple delineation of Streeterville, because it contains many tall buildings. In the center of this cityscape stands the former John Hancock Center and Water Tower Place. Philip M .Klutsnick was the developer of Water Tower Place and the Magnificent Mile. The line work in this cityscape drawing is fresh and loose because it is done in free-hand. There were no rulers to make perfectly straight lines in this cityscape rendering. The best cityscape drawings are clean and offer details. Architectural drawings are clean and precise because they show the architectural forms.
Chicago skyline 221A
The cityscape drawing is done with pen & ink because this makes dark lines that show architectural details. This cityscape is full of architectural details because there are many buildings in this area. The use of hatch lines was employed to make the outline of the buildings. Hatching was also used to fill in areas with shade and shadows. There was not cross-hatching used at all in this cityscape rendering. All of the lines are clear because there are no smudges. The pen used was a fine point nib because this brings out the smallest details in a cityscape rendering. This is a cityscape drawing not an architectural rendering because it has a scene filled with many buildings.
