Description
Chicago skyline 196A pen & ink cityscape drawing by artist Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC.
Cityscape
This cityscape rendering is taken from east Randolph Street in downtown Chicago. The drawing is done with pen & ink because of the skyscrapers. Skyscrapers need to be drawn with straight lines because they are buildings. This cityscape rendering is using hatched lines to make the solid forms of the skyline. The use of contour lines is pervasive throughout the drawing, because these delineate the architecture. Pen & ink are long time allies of cityscape drawings, because they show all of the details. However, pen & ink is very unforgiving and you must get it right the first time or you will have errors. The beauty of pen & ink is the clean and clear lines that it offers. With pen & ink cityscapes you get very strong looking drawings.
Chicago Skyline 196A
The cityscape drawing is done in free-hand with no use of straight edges or rulers. This cityscape is intended to be loose and friendly because the lines are loose. There is a lot more freedom in a cityscape drawing that is done by freehand because you are not restricted by the ruler. The use of hatched lines made the shade and shadows. There was no cross-hatching in the cityscape because that would make the line work too complicated. My goal was to draw a fresh and loose cityscape rendering. The more lines that you add to a cityscape the more complicated it becomes.
