Cityscape
This cityscape rendering is done in pencil and in three stages. The first stage I do a preliminary sketch because this is my guide for this cityscape. Then I detail all of the buildings with various soft lead pencils. In the final stage I put bold hatched lines with an Ebony Jet Black pencil. The Ebony Pencil is very soft and leaves a very wide and dark line. This lead is good or broad strokes only, because it cannot yield fine detailed lines. The soft lead have to be used for shading and shadows. The best lead pencils for cityscape delineation are HB and 2H leads. The stronger the lead pencil the harder the line in the cityscape.
Most cityscape drawing utilize a number of soft and hard lead pencils because of all the details. Architecture is the most demanding subject for lines, because they have to be straight!
Chicago Skyline 187A
The cityscape drawing is of the Chicago Loop at nighttime with dark lead pencils. The view is from the south looking north. In the center is the Willis Tower. Just in front of Willis Tower stands another very tall building that blocks the view of the tower. The background of the cityscape is done with Ebony Jet Black pencil. This pencil makes the sky look dark because of it’s soft grade of lead. The bottom of the cityscape is lighter because it reflect the street lights. There is a strong sense of movement in the cityscape because of the fast moving lines in the sky. These broad stroked lines I have name genius lines, because they are brilliant.
