Description
Chicago “L” train 256A pen & ink city scene drawing with Skyscrapers by Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC.
City Scene
This city scene rendering shows “L” train going south on Wabash Avenue. The CNA Insurance Company and Roosevelt University are seen behind the train. This city scene drawing shows the complexity of the engineering that supports the elevated tracks because of the immense detailing. All along the tracks are a series of frames that make a mesh to hold the tracks. The mesh is held together with millions of bolts to secure the frames. All of the metal in the frame is iron and steel because these are very strong. The height of the elevated tracks is 20 feet because it leaves room for busses and trucks.
Chicago “L” Train 255A
The city scene drawing is done with pen & ink on paper. Hatched lines are used extensively because of all the shading in the city scene. Little cross-hatching was used in this city scene rendering because of the complex iron work. The underside of the tracks are in shade and hidden from the sunlight because of the tracks above. To capture the shaded areas hatching was required because it gives even light. Cross-hatching under the tracks would make this dark area difficult to see. All under the tracks are a series of trusses that form a pattern of ribs that support the tracks. The rib cage under the tracks is made of iron.
