Chicago Skyline #427A
The Skyline
This view of the Chicago, Illinois, skyline is done from the eastern area of Burnham Harbor looking west towards the image of the towering skyscrapers and office buildings. The time of day is just afternoon and the sky is filled with rich tones of blue and green and you can almost feel the clouds moving with the colors of the sky. The soft greens and blue come through ever so gently because they match the compliment tones in the sky and the city skyline. There, the used of various shades of blue and green let the sky and water work together.
There, in working with watercolors it is best to use as few colors as possible so as not to muddy up the composition. Let the pen & ink carry the burden of detailing the architecture. If you look closely you can see that the pen & ink have nicely delineated the buildings of not. Because it is impossible to draw every building in the skyline, detailing has been on the most prominent structures.
Therefore, I have kept in mind as I draw to focus the detailing on the larger structures and use hatching to suggest the forms of the smaller ones. Because it is very difficult not only to draw each building it is hard for the viewer to recognize them. For this reason I choose hatching to fill in the details. Because I like details and I am a draftsman, I respect the forms of each object set before me. For this reason I employ pen & ink into my watercolors.
