Sunset

This sunset watercolor is of a small northern Italian town in the Alps, because it is quaint. Many of the northern Italian sunsets are more muted in tone, because they are closer to the mountains. As you go further south you get closer to the equator which is warmer. Freshness is the key to success in any watercolor because everything happens in a moment. Watercolor is very unforgiving so you have to do it correctly the first time you apply the colors. If you go over the watercolor it loses freshness. Watercolors unlike oils do not tolerate brush working because water is transparent. When the pigment of the paint is worked with the water is becomes permanent the moment that it touches the paper. To apply more brush work on the paper thins out the pigment and damages the texture of the paper. The more that you work the watercolor the worse it becomes. Always make your first stroke the best stroke, because it will yield the cleanest rendering.

Italian landscape 155A

The sunset in this watercolor is a muted gold that gives warmth to the rendering. The mountains give a nice backdrop to the sunset watercolor, because it catches the buildings of the small town. Pen & ink are used to bring out the architectural details of the watercolor. All of the line work is suggestive giving accent to the rendering. The best part of the watercolor is the composition, because the city below is nicely balanced with the mountains in the background. Also, by using pen & ink to detail the watercolor it give exactitude to the work of art. The village in nicely tucked into the bosom of the Alps, and give warmth to the watercolor. This is a middle level in the composition, and thus give firmness to the imagery. Make sure always to keep the subject matter open and clear. Putting too many lines or too much color can damage the watercolor. Watercolor paintings are very finicky and require the strictest discipline to look good.
