Chicago Skyline (714Z)

Art

This fine pen & ink drawing of the Chicago skyline is seen from Monroe Harbor looking west because that is a popular perspective. At the bottom of the drawing is the costal shoreline of the harbor up against Grant Park because of the wind on the waves. This rendering is a segment of the large skyline of Chicago because the skyline is too large. On the left side of the drawing is the Midcontinental Plaza and to the right side of the drawing is the Aon Center on East Randolph Street.

The drawing lends itself as a natural harbor city scene. At the center of the drawing, just above the water, are the trees that comprise the gardens of Grant Park. To the left of this area, and on seen in the drawing, is the famous illuminated Buckingham Fountain. This cityscape drawing is one of a series that I have done in pen & ink because this is a great city. Chicago has the second largest downtown in the country outside of Manhattan Island because it has a large population.

This cityscape drawing is done in pen & ink with a fine tip nib because it makes clear lines. I like doing a close-up rendering of the city because you can then recognize the different building much better. When you draw the skylines from a distance all you see is the outline of the city, rather than the individual buildings.

This fine pen & ink drawing of Timothee Chalamet a free-hand rendering.

This fine pen & ink watercolor rendering of earth as a flat planet in the solar system. On the top left of the watercolor is the light of the casting rays down toward the flat earth. Over on the right side of the watercolor is the moon resting in the light of the sun and the shaded area on the back side of the moon.

The drawing lends itself as a real fantasy because we all know for a fact that the earth is round. It is difficult for me to understand associations like the “Flat Earth Society” having any kind of membership. I have created this work of art to use as a stopper to people that I encounter on Quora. Many times there are individuals that spout off whale blubber and expect you to take it. So rather than quarrel with them I just send them a LOL with this watercolor above.

This fantasy drawing is about the planet earth being flat and is floating through the galaxy. This is a pen & ink watercolor rendering that shows the rays of the sun going down on the flat earth. On the right side of the watercolor is the moon, and you can see the dark side of the moon on the right side. I started the watercolor with a pencil sketch that I use as my guide for the pen & ink that is to come. When you are working with pen & ink you have to be very careful because ink on paper is very unforgiving. Like a wedding dress, once you put a spot on the gown it is there forever.

This fine pen & ink drawing of gay young man in the bathroom is very nice. He has very cut, and unusual leg features, because they seem to be a bit squared off. This is most appealing to me and very sexy, because good sex likes flair. He is standing in the bathroom naked and in front of the vanity mirror. This figure drawing is done first in pencil as my guide for the pen & ink lines that are to follow. This is a simple contour drawing that give the basic form of his body and face. When you ever draw a full body nude you have to use finer pen tips because the details are all small. You can see that in the face I have used an ultra fine pen tip to capture his eyes. I also employed the ultra fine pen to other parts of his figure so as to balance out the details. It would look distorted to have ultra fine lines only in the face.

The long and short of it is that you cannot make any mistakes when you are working with pen & inks.

This fine pen & ink drawing of Timothee Chalamet a free-hand rendering.

There are many photos of him on the Internet to choose from but this one stuck me. His hair reminds me very much of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Germany. Ludwig has the exact same hair with the curls, it is amazing. Like King Ludwig, Timothee is very handsome.

The drawing took me about 10 minutes to draw, and I also did a quick pencil sketch before hand. Most of the time when I do a pen & ink drawing I do a light pencil sketch first to be a guideline. It is very important to note, that the pencil sketch has to be light, because if it is dark it will compete with the pen & ink that follows.

This drawing is a simple contour line drawing that uses a minimum of hatched lines. Hatched lines are needed for expressing shade and shadows. It takes great skill to draw with contour lines because you have to have a firm understanding of the image that is your model.

When I saw the photo and all of the high contrast I took immediate interest in the figure. However, I knew that I did not want to go overboard with hatched and cross-hatched lines. Because this kind of an image lends itself to going into infinite detail on hatching and that is not what I wanted to do. Rather, I wanted to use hatch lines in a way that did not go into excess. That is hard to accomplish on a drawing like this because of all the dark areas.

I have made the line work playful and loose rather than tight and binding because that makes work on the eyes. For me the greatest pleasure in art is to just simply enjoy it. I do not like to draw tedious and complex images that people have trouble understanding.
