Description
Chicago skyline 271A pen & ink cityscape drawing from Monroe Harbor in silhouette by Stephen Condren.
Cityscape
This cityscape rendering is a pen & ink drawing of the Chicago skyline from Lake Michigan. The rendering of this cityscape is a silhouette because it makes the image flat. Contour lines are used to outline the skyline because this is the shape of the cityscape. Silhouette drawing are two dimensional and offer no perspective because they are flat. This type of rendering is excellent for doing skylines, because skylines are two dimensional. The skyline of a city is like the bar code on a shipping box because they have a unique shape. Each city has a unique skyline because they are seen from a distance. A city like Houston, or Phoenix have different buildings that affect the shape of the skyline.
A skyline is meant to be seen from a far distance because you can see all of the buildings. When you stand far from a subject it becomes flat because you lose perspective. A mountain range or stock market chart are the same formation as skyline because they are all flat. The silhouette image of the cityscape is a compliment to the design of the city.
Chicago Skyline 271A
The cityscape drawing is done in free-hand with black pen & ink on paper. This cityscape has vertical lines to form the skyscrapers because they are the focus of the rendering. Charcoal and pencil cityscape offer a softer tone to the drawing.
Watercolors make good cityscape renderings because they are translucent. When watercolors are mixed with pen & ink it is very detailed. Oils are the least used medium for skylines because they are think and difficult to work with.
