Description
Chicago skyline 246A pen & ink cityscape drawing of skyscrapers in the downtown Loop by Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC.
Cityscape
This cityscape rendering is a pen & ink drawing overlooking Monroe Harbor from Lake Michigan. The pen is a fine point using black ink because is shows all the details. This cityscape shows a view of the Chicago Loop because that is the downtown business district. The tallest building in the drawing is the Aon Center because it is close to the viewer. Willis Tower is the tallest building Chicago not in the drawing because it is set back on Wacker Drive. In the center of this cityscape is the Loop. The Loop is the central business district because it is the hearth of the city of Chicago. This area has the second largest cluster of skyscrapers in the country out side of Manhattan Island.
Chicago Skyline 246A
The cityscape drawing is done in free-hand because it is not an architectural rendering. This drawing is a work of Fine Art meant for viewing pleasure not commercial use. There is no use of rulers or straight edges to make the cityscape drawing because that would make the drawing look strange. The cityscape is meant to be seen as a free-hand drawing. There are no measurements or angles to be check on for scaling. Hatched lines were used extensively for making shade and shadows. No contour lines were used in the drawing because they flatten the image. Contour lines are meant for doing and out line of an image. The skyline is a thin cityscape so it needs depth to bring out the buildings.
