This Chicago skyline #748A pen & ink drawing by artist, Navy Veteran, Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC, of Condren Galleries offering oils, watercolors, and prints. This drawing is the culminating of Chicago Skyline #747A. This is a very dark drawing, offering just enough light to show the image of the buildings that form the skyline. Extensive use of hatching and cross-hatching was employed to bring out the darkness of the night. A small section at the bottom right of the drawing leaves enough light to show the lighted path along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Because Chicago skyline #748A is great, it’s prints are great!

The star of the show is 875 N. Michigan Avenue (formerly the John Hancock Center. This towering giant looms over the cityscape as a monumental guardian. The task of this drawing was to capture the light of the night time cityscape with hatching and cross-hatching lines. The pen & ink perfectly lends itself to this kind of work. What I am always trying to perfect is the luminosity from the street upward on to the buildings. This is a very difficult task to manage because the buildings lose lumens at they rise but not structure. If I were to merely hatch my way up the structures then all of the tops of the buildings would look smooth and soft.
