Description
Chicago skyline 209A pen & ink cityscape drawing by artist Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC.
Cityscape
This cityscape rendering is of the Chicago Loop overlooking Burnham Harbor. The cityscape is done in pen & ink with fine black lines. This is a night seen because the sky is black. I have made use of hatched and cross-hatched lines to make the shading. The more lines in a cityscape drawing make the scene darker. I have made a point to keep the ink down in this cityscape because it would become too dark. Pen & ink lines work well with cityscape drawings because they show lines clearly. Delineation is the most important aspect of an architectural rendering.
Chicago skyline 209A
The cityscape drawing show the center of the downtown district. Below are the waters of Burnham Harbor leading out to Lake Michigan. The tallest building in the drawing is Willis Tower because it has 108 floors. On the right side of the cityscape stands the Aon Center which has 80 floors. Chicago is consider the home of the skyscraper with the construction of the Home Insurance Building. The advent of the Great Chicago Fire lead to immediate construction of the city. At the turn of the Nineteenth Century Chicago was the fastest growing city in the world.
