For example, the pen & inks make use of wet or fluid material we call ink. Since ink is a liquid it does not lend itself at all to gradual strokes, but rather to sharp fine lines. This can be seen in the work of a calligrapher. You can of course choose to use blunt wood tips, however, this defeats the exactitude that is sought after in a pen & ink drawing.

Charcoal Pencil

The charcoal pencil is very strong and usually less sharp than a lead pencil or pen & ink. Often the grains of coal come off of the pencil as you are drawing on to the paper, so you have to be careful not to smear your work.

Lead Pencil

The lead pencil is the most common media for drawing. There are a large selection of lead hardness to choose from. The “B” leads are softer leads giving you darker lines but less sharp. The “H” leads tend to be very hard and not as dark.
