This portrait of Johnny Depp is first drafted out in pencil. After the brief pencil sketch I then start in with the pen & ink. I stared working on his right eye, then his nose and then over to his left eye. After the nose and eyes I started on his head and cap. I then started to draw the deep lines in his cheeks and then put in hatch lines for shadows.
Ink
The darkest part of the drawing is of course the hair. Rather than draw out every strand or group of strands I just simply worked the contour of the hair with hatching. The was no need to try and work out the details of his hair as it is a mess and not going to look good no matter how much ink was applied. Above all things I did not want to make him look older and with all the lights from the cameras it was very difficult to get any shadowing for developing his facial features.
Artwork Characteristics
Of the drawings that I have done of Mr. Depp this one is the most favorable to his deportment.
