Pen & ink drawings are a great way to express the beauty of the human male body. What I like best about this rendering is the use of hatched lines to made the shade and shadows of the figure, and to enhance the contour lines of the drawing. It is very difficult to make good images with pen & ink because it is a high contract medium. Also, pen & inks are very unforgiving. When you spill a drop of ink on the paper it is there for good. Even if you were to use elements to remove the ink, a mark on the paper with show that you have tampered with it.

In the case of the human body, you have to be very careful because the lines follow the contour of the face and body. You cannot make mistakes or the drawing will be ruined. Now with the photo that I used to make this rendering I had to focus on two things. The first thing was the contour of Simon’s body. Follow this was the second item, which was to work the shade and shadows on both the bed and Simon’s body.

Where you are using pen & ink you cannot just slick over it. Rather you have to carefully delineate the image. So when I made the hatch lines for the shading I had to change the direction of the lines when I left the bed and went to his body. If I did not do this it would look flat and like all is of one piece. Delineation requires diligence.
