This cityscape rendering is a pen & ink drawing of Navy Pier in Chicago. The water and sky are done with horizonal lines because they suggest the sunset. Navy Pier is drawn with vertical lines because it stands apart from the skyline. Because the skyline is all white it give high definition to the cityscape. The brightest element in this city scene rendering is the white of the skyscrapers. The former John Hancock Center is the tallest building in the skyline because it has 100 floors. Horizontal lines in the sky and water compress the image of Navy Pier because they are dominant.

The free-hand lines in this city scene rendering give warmth to the skyline because it is by hand. None of the lines in this skyline are done with rulers or straight edges because it is done by hand. The space between the parallel line is even throughout the city scene because it offers stability to the viewer. If The lines were to vary in spacing it would be too difficult to look at. Architectural renderings require straight lines and even layouts because they are cubical. All of the parallel lines are of the same series because they hold the same range at all points in the drawing. The buildings break the lines of the sky because they are taller than the line series. The line series continues on the other side of the skyscrapers so as to keep the line in place.

All of the lines in the water are parallel to the horizon. The sky is done with parallel lines to compliment the water. All of the lines in this city scene drawing are done with free-hand. The pen tip used in this city scene is a medium nib because they carry a thick line. Contour lines make the outline of the skyline that is behind Navy Pier. In the outline of the skyline I have left a few lines of the inner buildings because these designates the different skyscrapers. Navy Pier is distinguished by the use of vertical lines that show the outline. On the left side of the rendering is the Ferris wheel and on the right is the convention hall.
