This watercolor house portrait is done with blue siding and a rich tone of greens for the landscape.

There is not much shade in this watercolor but just a small amount at the top of the garage door and the front entrance. I have used a light purple shade tone to blend in with the blue siding and green landscape.

The line work for this drawing is very light because Mr. Holland is so young. When drawing younger people with pen & ink it is essential to use only the fewest lines possible. I always start a drawing with a light weight pencil sketch. After the sketch is complete I start the inking process. Most of the time I start by inking the left eye then go over to do the right eye. Of course to the sitter these are the right eye then the left! I work from the center and go outward.

Most of the time I do the eyes first, then I follow down to the nose and mouth. From there I go to the ear on the left side of the paper and start working up the skull and then down the chin.

Speed and brevity are the characteristics of this pen & ink rendering of Tom Brady.

The shade and shadows on the house are done with a mild tone of purple to let the light of the bricks show through. With watercolor as an assistant to the lines of the pen & ink you get a robust rendering.

Skyline Delineation

The skyline sketch is first laid out in pencil then I go over this in ink so that you can more clearly see the angle and horizon line. The pen & ink help convey the substance of the drawing better than just pencil alone. Please note that all of these lines are loosely done and provide the suggested concept of the work of art to come. This is just the staring point of the rendering process and this sketch is on a separate sheet of paper from the original work of art to come.

Hatching & Cross-hatching

The shade and shadows on the sketch are to help denote the affect of light on the composition. One of the most effective ways to demonstrate shade and shadows are with hatch lines. Hatch lines are short parallel lines drawn in a row along a shaded surface to as to “cast” the shadow on the image in the drawing.

Skyline Delineation

This skyline, which is one of my favorites is a view of Chicago looking south from Belmont Harbor. The center of attention is the world famous John Hancock Center.

Hatching & Cross-hatching

The use of hatching is worked in line with the water and the buildings. There are no deep shades and shadows in this rendering as the most of the structures are outlined.

This is a townhouse and not a single family home. This gives a challenge to the artist because instead of a solid three dimensional element to work with he has a plane.

Hatching & Cross-hatching

The shadows and shading are done along the top of the garage door and the entrance of the house. Then I was over the ink lines with purple watercolor to bring out the tones in the brick.

This is a site plan of a large estate in Lake County, Illinois. As you can see there is a nice large home near the front of the property and then along a path to the rear are some out buildings followed by a large barn.

The line work is done with pen & ink. The lines play a key role in this drawing because we are so high up in the sky that we cannot see any of the architectural details from this perspective.

The shade and shadows make use of India ink lines with loose play of details due to the farness of the house.
