Description

Chicago skyline #855A bamboo & ink cityscape drawing is popular because of it’s rich red lines, and the print comes matted 11″x14″.

Chicago skyline #427A pen & ink cityscape drawing, by artist Stephen Condren, BFA, SAIC, of Condren Galleries. Because Chicago skyline bamboo drawings are great, their prints are great!

Key elements of this work of art are as follows:

In this pen & ink drawing of the Chicago, Illinois, Skyline I have chosen to use red ink with bamboo stick. The reason that I have chosen the bamboo stick is to get a deeper richer line than you get with a traditional metal tip pen. The weight of the line can be more easily adjusted with the bamboo stick than with metal tips, of course the line is thicker and not intended for use as fine line tool as in cross-hatching and minute details.

John Hancock Center with Chicago skyline

In looking at the drawing you will see as with the other drawings in this series that the John Hancock Center. It stands gracefully and resplendent in the center of the drawing, it is surrounded by a cluster of smaller buildings near its base. I have omitted the Four Seasons Hotel which shows in the other drawing because the fragmented image of it against the John Hancock Center. This is because it would not really lend itself to the bamboo line weight and also gives full sweep to the image of this grand structure. To the left of the John Hancock Center is the Water Tower Place and then further is the Park Hyatt and Nieman Marcus Building (737 North Michigan Avenue).

Famous buildings

I would like you to take notice of the flowing lines along the rooftops of the building to the right leading up to the John Hancock Center, these lines are designed to give lightness and air to the drawing that you could not get with a fine-point pen. This nicely continues past the John Hancock Center to the end of the drawing at the Nieman Marcus Building. The same flowing line work is also done on the shading of the John Hancock Center and more specifically the Water Tower Place. Special attention to shading details has been made so as to not make the darker sections of the drawing blurred.

Mies Van Der Rohe

There are a staggered series of blocks that make up the building that give away their structural identity, notice the Mies Van Der Rohe apartment at 860 & 880 North Lake Shore Drive. I would like to make a special note to the building at the far right of the drawing, this is 999 North Lake Shore Drive and it is the only building in Chicago that has an odd number on the west side of the street.

All in all I am pleased with the drawing and how effectively the bamboo stick work in bringing me the results that I sought.
