Delineation

The house is modern Midwest suburban two story structure. The lines of this home work well for rendering as the architect did an excellent job of correctly aligning the central block of the structure to the rest of the dwelling.

Hatching & Cross-hatching

The house lends itself naturally to pen & ink, especially in the entry and porch on the first floor. The use of hatching was a natural here as well as on the dormers in the front over the garage.

Delineation

The house is situated on a large parcel of land lending itself to a lovely and gracious landscape. The red shutters are reflected in the red leaves of the shrubs and trees. The delineation of the home is a soft loose line that compliments the landscape. I do not what the watercolor to look too “architectural” but rather more artistic. This is a closing gift and not an architectural rendering to shown to a banking or civic committee meeting. The more natural and soft the better the artistic merits come through. Hatching & Cross-hatching

The shading is done with watercolor and no use of any kind of hatching has been employed in this rendering. Most of the time the use of hatching is the best vehicle for describing shade and shadowing in a rendering. Delineation

The delineation of this house was complicated due to the Tudor style of the home. The colors of the front of the home blend in well with the landscape. The lines, though strict, offer a nice pattern to look at. The tree trunks on the right are a joy to me.

The entrance of the building is the most shaded using hatching but no cross-hatching.

This is a modern Tudor style home built by Cambridge Homes, a long time building contractor in Libertyville, Illinois. The line work on this rendering was difficult due to the many boards that crisscross along the façade of the house. It is imperative to align all of the board patterns to that they for the correct delineation of the house.

Hatching & Cross-hatching

There was a nice amount of hatching in the rendering due to all of the eaves and front porch. The watercolor that is to follow nicely fills in the tones of the colors of the boards and plater material.

The house is a waterfront property in Grayslake, Illinois, which is a quiet suburb of Chicago. This region is known as the Chain-O-Lakes because of all the small lake that are in this part of Lake County, Illinois. The vanishing point of the perspective is right at the font entry. The lines all meet there and are balance with fine hating that brings out the shading.

The pen & ink of this home is most pleasing to me. I like everything about it. All of the lines work together to bring out the form of the structure. Also this is a waterfront property so I made sure to let the water behind the property be seen. This pen & ink does not bring out the lake behind but the watercolor to follow will.

The house made use of a good amount of hatching but no cross-hatching. The entry and porch are the areas with most of the shade in the image and thus took most of the line work.

This is the watercolor or last phase of the house portrait on Merrill in Grayslake. The delineation of the drawing was done prior to painting it so the lines of course show through since it is watercolor.

Hatching & Cross-hatching

The fine clear lines of the ink give a strong presence of the house on paper. I have used tones of purple to accent the hating lines under the eaves and entry.

Delineation

This rendering of the house is the second phase of creating a house portrait. The first phase is drawing it in pencil on the watercolor paper. After I have done this I get a few fine pens of differing lines weights and India ink and start to draw. I usually use the MLS images but on occasion my clients will give me a photo with an angle or time of year that is more pleasing to them.

The house made use of hatching all along the eaves and the entry giving it a handsome appearance.
